harmony from our hearts as well as voices
Harmony, Inc., is an international association of women barbershop singers formed in 1959.
New Spirit of Maryland is the first Harmony, Inc. affiliate in the state of Maryland
Barbershop is a form of unaccompanied singing that originated with nineteenth century gentlemen who sang together for pleasure while waiting for a shave or a haircut.
When women sing in this style, we use the traditional terms for the parts: bass, baritone, lead, and tenor.
BENEFITS
Singing is good for you! It is a great way to relax in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Research shows that overtone harmonics have an amazing ability to calm the body, clear the mind, and relieve fatigue. And when you learn music, you always have a song in your heart.
In our chapter we enjoy an affordable hobby emphasizing craft rather than costumes, choreography and competition.
